Science Week In Nursery

All week Nursery have been planting their own flowers. We talked about what a flower needs to grow- sunshine, water and soil. The children then decorated their own plant pots and planted their flower.

Nursery have also spent today looking at the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We listened to the story and then discussed what food the caterpillar ate in the story. We looked at an apple and a pear and described what they felt like and the colours we could see. After that, we printed pictures of butterflies using the fruit and even made fruit kebabs!

Eco club

In Eco club on Tuesday Mrs Camp and her daughter Alex came to support, the children were split into 3 groups and each worked with an adult.

Mrs Daley’s group cleaned out the shed to make sure it was organised and to ensure there is room to put the vegetables we are beginning to grow on the side so that they grow well.

Mrs Camp’s group started to weed the beds to ensure they are ready for the next couple of weeks when we beginning our planting.

Alex’s group started planting some beans into little pots which are now in the shed beginning to grow.

We made great progress and the children had a great time!

Science assembly

On Wednesday morning we had a ‘sharing assembly’, it was great to hear about the wonderful Science experiments that have been been taking place over the week so far. We had lots of scientific vocabulary used during the assembly and Year 4 even shared a demonstration of one of their experiments.

Each house team also shared their ‘unusual object’ that was a challenge set by Miss Carter on Monday as part of their scavenger hunt.

Using natural and manmade materials to make birds nests

This morning in Year 2 we have been working very hard at Nest HQ to ensure the birds have fantastic nests. First we had a little recap of our learning from yesterday which was looking at why birds migrate over the winter and even looked at the way they fly in large flocks.

Mrs Radcliffe and Mrs Daley set up two boxes per table for us, one with different manmade materials in and the other with natural materials in.

We had to work in our house teams to plan how we were going to make our nests and then use a range of materials depending on their properties to make suitable nests for the birds.

We talked about two main questions;

1. What would make a good birds nest?

2. What properties do the materials need to have to make good nests?

We thought about making the nests warm and cosy, as well as strong, sturdy and camouflaged from predators. Roosting takes place in the nests too so it needs to be high up so that the eggs and chicks are safe.

We decided that using natural materials was the best as clay provides a strong base for the nest, twigs make good sides to hide the eggs and chicks as well as making them sheltered, the leaves we used made the bed area cosy, warm and comf6 for the birds. Some children thought that using some manmade materials such as sponges would provide good support as it could soak up the rain.

Thank you to Mrs Provis and Mrs Horton for coming in to support us, we had a great time and learnt lots!

Forest school morning

This morning we had an introduction assembly to Science week, we found out that if you add bicarbonate of soda to lemon it causes a chemical reaction and fizzes, to make it more exciting we added food colouring. After this we worked collaboratively in our house teams and had a Forest School morning. We were given four different activities to complete in our groups. The yellow team started at the pond area, we were given a scavenger hunt to do and the resources to do tree rubbings. We were very successful and found all of the things Miss Carter had put on the list even a wild card item, we think we will get the extra points for ours.

The second activity we completed was the den building, we had lots of fun and even used rope and tarpolein to make our den draft free. The third activity we completed after break time was the collaborative art, we had a big yellow sheet and found lots of natural materials to put together to show our team animal which is a snow leopard. Finally we were in the quad planting nasturtiums, we took it in turns filling our pots with compost, popping the seeds in, covering them and watering them.

It was such a wonderful start to the week, even the sunshine came out. A big thank you to Mrs Daley and Miss Carter for arranging a fabulous morning!

This week in Reception – w/b 4.3.18

We started our week celebrating Pancake Day.  We learnt how to make pancakes using the story of ‘The Pancake’  then we wrote instructions how to make a Pancake in our Literacy work.  To finish our day we enjoyed eating pancakes with chocolate and strawberry sauce.

We have finished our week celebrating World Book Day.  The children came into school dressed up as their favourite bedtime story character or in their pyjamas – ready for bedtime.

The children enjoyed learning about Miss Barber’s favourite stories – The Tiger Who Came To Tea and The Gruffalo.

World Book Day

Today we came in dressed as characters from our favourite books or in our PJs! We had a bit of a different day, we split up into 3 groups, with team ladybird, mermaid and snail – from Miss Carter, Miss Frowen and Mrs Latham’s book choices. Over the course of the day, we have battled it out in our handwriting, English, maths  and art lessons for points, based on who has completed the most impressive work. We also gained points for good listening, sitting, behaviour, kindness and answering questions.

In our groups we had our own circle time, where the book for each team was shared. We then went round our groups and told our friends our favourite books and why, writing it down as we went. Some of our group members even read part of their favourite book to the rest of their teams!

In our math lesson, we had a slight problem! There weren’t enough books to go around. We had to work out how many books we were short each time, using our knowledge of subtracting tens and ones.

This afternoon, each team worked collaboratively to create a giant version of their book front cover. They are works in progress as you can see (we had to squeeze PE in too!) But, watch this space for the finished products…

Outdoor gym

Yesterday for our Science crest award, we completed the Outdoor Gym activity. Our challenge was to design some great exercises using parts of our playground. We thought of running up the steps, step ups, bunny hops and push ups.

A Busy Tuesday For Nursery

Yesterday, Nursery had a very exciting visitor. As we are looking at people who help us for our current topic Congleton Police came to see us. They talked about what uniform they have to wear and why, What they do within the local community and even let us try on some of the police uniform. After all that excitement Nursery were able to sit in the police car and turn on the siren.

After that we made our very own pancakes! We discussed that an oven is hot and how to be careful in a kitchen. Once we had made our pancakes we picked what healthy toppings we wanted.

Year One’s Material Experiment

This afternoon in Year One, disaster struck and our umbrellas all broke before the awful rain storm! We each chose 5 different materials to test and see if they would make a suitable cover for the hole. We then all decided on the best material, based upon its scientific properties and explained why we thought it would be the best. Overall, we concluded that the rubber from the rubber glove appeared to be the best replacement.

Absorbent or waterproof?

This afternoon in year 2 we have been experimenting in Science as part of our topic ‘materials’. We were given a range of materials and worked together to see if they absorbed the water we put on them or they were waterproof.

We had lots of fun and learnt lots too. We know that the scientific word absorbent means ‘a material that can soak up liquid’.
