After School Club – Girls Football

With the wet, cooler weather approaching it was time to move indoors for this week’s football. Yet again another great match where all the skill that have been developed over the previous weeks were then put into practice with another year 3 vs the school competition.

To start with it was a close game until out of nowhere the school team scored but it wasn’t long till year 3 could stand no more and matched them.

Year 4 Science

Today Year 4 began their new Science topic.

We started the lesson by categorising different materials into different ways. The children were given: a paper towel, breadcrumbs, plastic spoon, water, white vinegar, flour, custard, sand, food colouring, rice, hand sanitiser, washing up liquid and breaded croutons.

After a number of minutes and a great amount of discussion in groups as to how they could be sorted the children then discussed as a class what had been found.

The children were then asked to think about which were solids and which were liquids. This then started a debate as to what was meant by solid and what the definition of a liquid was.

After another bout of categorising the children then determined which were solid, and which were liquid. But there was still some confusion as why water could pour but sand could also pour but this was a solid.

The children then went outside and made themselves into a solid and then into a liquid. This showed how the structure of the two are made up and how liquids are able to move much more freely.

The children formed the structure of a solid.
The children formed the structure of a liquid.

After School Clubs – KS1 Cooking

This week there was an exciting surprise in the kitchens with the gentle smell of pizza drifting through the corridors.

The group carefully had to spread the tomato purée around their bases. Gently adding a sprinkle of cheese along with options of sausage and tomato.

They were then cooked and within minutes were ready to eat.

There were lots of chances for the children to say “CHEESE.”

After School Clubs – KS2 Cooking

Towards the playground side of the school a familiar smell was drifting through the corridors with the subtle smell of fresh pizzas.

After spreading a generous layer of tomato purée a top their bases the children had a selection of cheese, sausage and tomatoes which they all took turns in preparing for the evening delight.

After a quick spell in the oven, it was time to eat. Even more hungry mouths were ready to enjoy the tasty treats.

After School Clubs – Allotment Club

As the colder Autumn nights come along and Winter begins to make an appearance it’s time to harvest the last of the crops.

The children began by splitting into two teams, the first to organise and pick the last of the corn and the second to pick the last of the tomatoes.

After the hard work of picking had been done it was then time to add the last of the plants to the compost heap to produce a rich fertiliser for future years crops.

Year 4 and 5 go to Eaton Bank

Year 4 and 5 were invited to Eaton Bank for a celebration of music.
As the children arrived into the hall they were greeted by a number of musicians each playing a different family of instruments.

The children were introduced to the different instruments by the conductor, who taught us about the different musical families.

Woodwind, which consisted of the flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet and bassoon.

Brass, where we learnt about the French horn, trumpet and trombone.

String, we finished with the violin, viola and the cello.

However, there was one section that was missing, the percussion.

The children were then given the opportunity to create their own music.
Working in groups with a musician, they were given an image to put music to using the percussion instruments. They were all then able to show off their composition to the rest of the groups.

Year 4 English

In our English work we have been reading the story of Romulus and Remus and the origin of Rome and the Romans.

In the story the two twins earn the right to be king however, only one can take the crown. The two end up in an argument which leads to a fight and one brother is victorious and becomes king.

The children had their own argument, in the form of a debate, in class over who should be the rightful king.

The debate went on for a long time and after lots of discussion, lots of justification and lots of amazing reasoning the majority of the class declared that Romulus was the rightful king.

Year 4 Computing

After last weeks lesson of creating our own weather stations to collect reading from the rain, wind and temperature we have started looking at EXTREME WEATHER.
We were able to identify extreme weather conditions and asked ourselves, “How can we detect and reduce the damage from extreme weather?”
In pairs we worked together to create a design to be able to detect the weather and then what the machine could do to help reduce the damage and casualties.

Computing Year 4

This half term we have been looking at the weather.
What is the weather? What it means to us? How can we monitor the weather? How can we record the weather.

We discussed the three major elements we look at with the weather is: The temperature, the wind and amount of rain. We found that rain is measured in millimeters (mm), wind is measured in miles per hour (mph) and temperature is measured in degrees celsius (°C),

In groups we then made our own weather stations to record these three elements of weather.

This started with some thinking time. What would we need?

After collecting our equipment it was time to start construction.

After a long afternoon of thinking and construction, more thinking and rebuilding it was time to reveal our finished projects. Would they work?

Year 4 Science

This week we have started our new topic all about habitats.
What is a habitat?
Why are they important?
Where can they be found?

Once our scientific minds began to question we turned our attention to our own school. What habitats can we find around school? So we set our minds to finding different habitats around the school.
